EEG-Based Sleep Monitoring
Approximately 26 years of your life are spent sleeping (227,916 hours to be exact), in which our body is able to
rejuvenate itself and prepare for the day ahead [1]. Adequate sleep is crucial for our mental and physical health,
while also regulating various bodily systems such as the endocrine system. Imagine if there could be something that was not only beneficial but also informative to help predict and understand our health status during this time.
Beacon Biosignals is using electroencephalogram (EEG) technology to understand sleep metrics using an FDA
cleared headband either at home or in a clinical setting [2].
Using the EEG signals, their platform can predict psychiatric disorders, sleep disorders, and track neurological conditions such as epilepsy and Parkinson’s disease [2]. Beacon Biosignals software has used AI models to train on over 200,000 hours of EEG sleep data across various
populations. They also create the hardware and software required to analyze the data recorded. EEG signals are used to measure the brain's spontaneous electrical activity, using electrodes that are placed on the head. The Beacon
Biosignals headset uses 6 dry electrodes designed to be worn at home, which do not disrupt sleep.
So far, the system has been published, looking at hypersomnia disorders, Parkinson's disease, and the effects of
antiseizure medication. The Beacon Biosignals system is currently only being used for
research and clinical trials but will hopefully expand for personal use as well.
