New Help for Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is the leading cause of disability worldwide, estimated to affect up to 843 million individuals by 2050.
This global crisis demands innovative, long-term solutions.

Abbott’s comprehensive portfolio of neurostimulation therapies, such as their Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) Systems, hopes to meet this demand by offering individuals living with chronic pain or a movement disorder the potential to live with significantly reduced pain and move better. These therapies deliver targeted electrical stimulation to the spinal cord, dorsal root ganglion (DRG), or brain, depending on the individual’s condition. Abbott’s goal is to provide effective, medication-free options that help patients manage pain, reduce or stabilize long-term medication use, and regain quality of life.

The Proclaim SCS Family and Eterna SCS System are indicated for the treatment of chronic pain, including pain caused by Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy (DPN) and nonsurgical back pain. These expanded indications were included in a recent FDA approval on May 30, 2024.

The Proclaim SCS Family offers a recharge-free design, while the Eterna System provides a rechargeable option with the smallest implantable pulse generator in Abbott’s SCS portfolio. Both platforms are upgradeable via software, enabling patients to benefit from new technology without surgical replacement using an initial outpatient surgery.

Abbott’s proprietary BurstDR stimulation waveform is engineered to mimic the natural firing patterns of neurons in the brain. This advanced therapy engages how both the body and mind process pain, often reducing the intensity and suffering associated with chronic pain more effectively than traditional tonic stimulation.

The Proclaim DRG Neurostimulation System is the first and only FDA-approved neurostimulation therapy specifically indicated for chronic, intractable pain associated with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) Types I and II of the lower limbs. This condition, which often follows surgery or injury, can be precisely managed by targeting the dorsal root ganglion, a key nerve structure involved in pain signaling.

For patients with Parkinson’s disease or essential tremor, the Infinity Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) System delivers mild, targeted electrical pulses to specific areas of the brain, helping to alleviate tremor and movement-related symptoms. It remains the only DBS system offering remote programming capability through NeuroSphere Virtual Clinic, allowing clinicians to adjust therapy settings via secure Bluetooth connectivity, helping patients experience optimal relief without frequent in-person visits.

In summary, Abbott’s portfolio of neurostimulation therapies provides innovative, evidence-based, and patient-centered solutions to help individuals living with chronic pain and movement disorders move more freely, reduce medication dependence, and enhance overall well-being. This portfolio provides innovative solutions designed to help individuals living with chronic pain and movement disorders achieve greater well-being and a more active life.
